Writing Group Reboot
Reconnecting with my writer friends
Sunday morning. It was under an overcast morning. Day two of a three-day weekend. Today, I would be on Zoom meeting with my writing group. I was excited. I hadn’t been online with my writing friends for months.
This was understandable for many reasons. Three of us are teachers and we were wrapping up one school year and preparing for the next one. In addition, we’re all parents. Our kids range in age from kindergarten to college. The summer was hectic and we had so many cancellations. But we still kept in touch via texting.
It was 11 a.m. I logged into Zoom. Actually, it was 11:06, I was late due to getting sidetracked. But my friends were there. At least two of them. The third woman was having trouble logging on. As we were talking, the fourth member of our group came on. Our quartet was complete.
Seeing everyone was a huge relief. We all looked great. Time had treated us well. We caught up on months of happenings from work events to family. It was good to catch up. I loved hearing everyone’s stories. It was as if we hadn’t seen each other for months at all.
We then talked about writing. Again, we were all at various stages. One woman hadn’t done much writing at all. Some of us had only done work-related writing. I had been focused on my essays, but not so much on my poetry. My fiction story had stalled. I vowed to get back to it.
We then agreed to make more time to meet. We decided that Sunday evenings would work the best. We would meet every other Sunday beginning at 6 PM. I’m so happy that my group is back together. We’re great writers with bright futures. We just need to focus on our craft and support each other.
