Voting Rights are Under Assault

Our Democracy is in Peril

This is a big deal. Biden needs to move ahead on ending the filibuster and pass the voting rights bill. It is about damn time.

This is important for Black and Brown people. This is important for Indigenous people. Racists want to roll back voting rights for people of color. Our grandparents fought and some even died for those rights. Because of this history of this country. Our ancestors are watching.

If we can’t get this done, democracy will begin its downward spiral into dictatorship. It is my firm belief that many Republicans want a more subservient nation. A nation where individual rights are restricted and controlled.

Biden can’t let this happen. But is he doing too little too late? His speech in Atlanta may have been more for show than a rallying cry against racists. Black people feel betrayed. We voted for Biden. We believed that he would undo the damage that Trump did during his presidency. And while Biden has done some things, the major pieces of legislation remain unsigned.

We’re in the midst of a pandemic. Viruses are mutating every day. Greek scientists have discovered a variant that has combined Delta with Omicron. They have named it Deltacron. I knew this was coming and now it is here. Twenty-five people in Greece have been infected with his new variant.

Voting rights must happen and they must happen before the November mid-term elections. Republicans want to regain power on both sides of Congress. If they accomplish that feat, Biden’s power will be constrained. This will place Biden in a bigger hole with the general public. The 2024 election is two years away. The clock is ticking.

John Lewis wanted voting rights. We must honor his work and his legacy. Too many people want things to go backward in terms of individual rights and freedoms. This is not 1950. This is 2022. Let’s move forward!
