The Educated are Needed Now More Than Ever!

One of the first tasks incoming dictator (I mean, president) Donald Trump has is dismantling the Department of Education. Trump wants to send all of the federal-level educational responsibilities to the states. He supports school choice, voucher programs, and charter schools.

Dismantling the Department of Education at the federal level would require approval through Congress. The Republicans hold a razor-thin majority in the House and Senate. If Trump wants anything to go through, the Republicans would need some Democrats on their side.

If the Democrats are smart (and that’s saying a lot), they will fight tooth and nail on anything that Trump wants to do. The Department of Education is needed to guide the states on English Language Learners and Special Needs students. If it were discontinued, many of those students would lose the support they need to be successful in the classroom.

But that’s what Trump wants — fewer students, especially students of color, receiving the necessary educational support to achieve academically. Trump has been quoted as saying that he “likes the poorly educated.” Of course he does! Those people blindly followed him down the rabbit hole and returned Trump to power.
