To Return to NYFW: A Writer’s Journey

NYFW has begun and I’m not there!

Here I sit in the school library of one of my many gigs, lamenting that I‘m not in New York to take in the sights and sounds of NYFW. Unlike in September 2023, I was working full time with a steady income and had the opportunity to take off for four days to participate in activities and attend the shows. But this time it’s different.

I’m not working full-time. I have three jobs and I’m about to take on a 4th. I've been interviewing and sending out resumes with mixed results. I’m tired during the week and barely get any rest on the weekend. I want to dress up, go to fashion shows, take pictures, and build my fashion resume. Instead, I sit in a library between teaching periods and typing my woes during my break.

The rebel in me had wanted to just go and forget the consequences — four days of missed pay from my three jobs. Plus, I wouldn’t be able to start my new gig as scheduled. The thought of losing all of that money kept me working and away from the action in New York.

I’m trying to look on the bright side. February vacation is coming up and I could spend a couple of days in NYC then. I could create my own mini Fashion Week by perusing the shops in Soho, Times Square, and Union Square. That would certainly be fun and I could make my schedule. It’s doable to spend a couple of days in NYC based on my current finances.

I deserve to treat myself to a mini trip. I love New York with all its boroughs and boutiques. Millions of tourists descend on NYC every week to take in the sights and shop. NYC is the place to be at any time of the year. Plus, there’s always September and if I save up enough money, I can be at the September 2024 shows. Hope is eternal!
