Can the popular app be saved?
On Friday, January 17th, the Supreme Court upheld the ban on TikTok. This means unless Biden (or Trump) decides to extend the deadline, TikTok will “go dark” on Sunday, January 19th.
What does this mean for TikTok’s 170 million American users? They will still be able to access the platform but encounter glitches. The glitches will worsen until the app cannot be accessed at all. New users won’t be able to download the app.
Biden and Congress claim the ban is because Bytedance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, is stealing data from its users. What data would they want from ordinary citizens trying to express their creativity? My data would be embarrassing, to say the least. China might feel sorry for me.
The real reason is that TikTok has become a place where communities have been formed, information shared, and money has been made. Ordinary people have become media sensations. Many people use TikTok as their primary source of income. However, the main reason is that anti-American sentiment has grown on TikTok.
People are tired of the lopsided power structure in America. The wealthy have become the uber-wealthy. The poor continue to see their savings dwindle. There is no longer a middle class in America. There are only the rich, the working class, and the poor. And the resentment for…
