The Eternals are Epic
Spoilers ahead!
I watched the Eternals at the theater and left wanting more. It was a lavish and rollicking adventure spanning thousands of years. To begin, the beings known as the Celestials created the Eternals, superpowered beings who are immortal. The Celestials’ leader, Arishem, sends the Eternals to Earth, seemingly under the guise of protecting the planet from the Deviants.
As we watch the Eternals make first contact with the ancient people of the time, we see how they help those people grow and develop. While the Eternals aren’t allowed to interfere in the affairs of man, they do provide protection and guidance. We see the Eternals go to various empires such as Babylon and Tecnhilioxta.
The Eternals have unique abilities that help them against the Deviants. Thena, played by Angelina Jolie, is a warrior and well-versed in fighting. Sprite, a child-like Eternal, can cast illusions. Duijo can control minds. Sersi can change the structure of any material. Icarus, the strongest Eternal, can fly and shoot laser beams from his eyes.
For thousands of years, the Eternals travel together, fighting Deviants and protecting mankind. However, as the team sees how violent man has become, they become divided over whether or not to intervene. The division leads the team to eventually split up and live their own lives. Ajax, the team leader, urges them to go and pursue their own passions.
Fast forward to the present day, Sersi works as a teacher in London. She has a boyfriend (not Icarus) and enjoys her life. Suddenly, a major earthquake strikes the city, causing concern. However, when a Deviant appears, that concern becomes terror. Sersi, Sprite, and Icarus reunite to find the other Eternals and search for the other Deviants.
Eternals is full of twists and turns. We get a lot of flashbacks that explain the present-day situation of each member. There is love, laughter, and a lot of fighting. The Deviants are vicious creatures with the ability to kill an Eternal. But it seems they’re not the only problem. A betrayal by one of the Eternals rocks the team to its core.
Now, the members must fight one of their own and save the Earth. A celestial is about to be born and their birth will destroy the planet. Billions will die. It;’s a race against time as the Celestial is ready to emerge from deep with the Earth. The Celestials must find a way to stop the Deviants, defeat one of their own, and prevent the emergence of the new Celestial.
I give the Eternals two thumbs up. The movie is nearly three hours long, but it’s worth it. It’s entertaining and a wild ride. The Eternals are a great addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The end credits will definitely continue the conversation as we await the sequel to the Eternals.
