Sequins, Sequins, and More Sequins

The Ebony Winter Gala 2023 returned with a bang — or a bling. It was held on Friday, December 15th. The gala had been postponed since December 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic tore through the country and around the globe. In addition, one of the organizations responsible for putting on the gala became defunct and interest waned as people hunkered down during the COVID storm. As the pandemic eased, talks resumed about bringing the gala back this year.

The attendees came dressed to celebrate the return of the gala. Many women wore form-fitting sequin gowns with trains. Most men came in tuxedos or brocade jackets. The sequins ranged from glamorous to overdone. Sequin attire can be a bit tricky to pull off. It depends on the outfit. The form-fitting gowns were lovely ranging in shades from gold to red and silver. Some women wore sequin pantsuits which had mixed results. If the accessories and shoes aren’t paired well then the outfit goes from glam to sloppy.

I, for one, am so glad the gala returned. December just felt so empty without the event. I’ve been attending for over a decade and enjoyed people-watching,m dancing, and eating. Yes! We can’t forget the food! Every gala a sumptuous buffet is laid out for guests. There were chefs serving steak prepared to your liking. There was salad, pasta, and cod cakes, and crab cakes. There was a selection of bread and a dessert station. In years past, the chief complaint about the gala was that the food disappeared by 10 pm…
