Thank you for ypur piece. I enjoyed reading it. My take is on this - I think Black traditions of childrearing are based on survival. Remember, we live in a racist country trying to erase our part in its development. From "slavery was a choice" to "Slavefry was a vocational [rogram" our children are being given the message that slavery wasn't a bad thing. I even heard it the other day in the classroom - Black students were debating whether it was better to be a Jew during the Holocaust or an enslaved person during the Enslavement era. A Black girl said she would rather be a slave because "at least they were housed and fed." I was sitting at my desk trying not to scream. In addition, many Black and Brown children speak disrespectful to adults in schools and other settings. When it comes to other races - not so much. It's seemd our children are always challenging Black teachers and mouthing off at authority. No one is telling them their behavior could get them killed one day. Black culture isn''t perfect, but no culture is. We need to teach our chikdren that knowledge is power and the more they know the more they can fight against injustice and racism.
