Self Care is So Necessary
The death of Twitch Boss by suicide Makes that a Reality
Twitch Boss died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in a hotel room. Details are still coming in, but the police have yet to release if Boss left behind a note or any reasons for taking his life. Many speculate that Boss suffered from depression and took his life because of mental illness.
Boss was only 40 years old, married with three children. Two of his children are still very young. His wife, family, and friends are devastated by Boss’ passing. This leaves many to wonder how such tragedies can be prevented. Again.
Suicide happens every day to many people — young and old, men and women, teens, and even younger children. The reasons behind suicide vary — depression, anxiety, financial crisis, abuse, and bullying are some of the most common causes. In any event, people take their lives because they feel there are no other options. They feel isolated and alone, believing no one understands their pain. That couldn't be further from the truth.
Oftentimes., if people share their struggles they’d be surprised by how many people have the same struggles. We need more mental health centers. support groups, and therapists. This is especially needed in communities of color. Boss, an African American man, joins a growing list of African-Americans who have taken their lives in recent years. Earlier in 2022, a popular Tik Tok and Instagram influencer committed suicide by jumping from her building. By all appearances, the influencer had it all. She had a huge following, brand deals, and provided advice to would-be influencers. But behind her wide smile and bright eyes lurked a sadness that consumed her, leading to her death.
That’s why self-care is important. In this high-speed, high-tech world, we barely have time to catch our breaths. We’re always on the go and never have time to stop and get our bearings. Society places a lot of pressure on us to be busy and profitable. We need to be creating, market and promoting every second. Because of FOMO (fear of missing out), people are juggling multiple projects and engagements.
As a person with depression, I was caught up in the go go go mentality. I had to be involved in everything and be everywhere. While I still want to attend huge events, I am more focused on events that will help my career. Not every event will do that. So, I need to select events carefully.
This focus eases my anxiety. When my anxiety eases, my depression is much more manageable. I feel more in control and productive. I can get things done with a lot less pressure on my shoulders. Less pressure also equals less anxiety.
Another way to manage our mental health is to connect with nature. Research shows that walking in a forest can do wonders for the psyche. In Japan, this is a common activity. Surrounding themselves with trees and other aspects of nature is a huge deal in the country. In America, with so many parks and open spaces, nature walks are often free or low-cost ways to ease stress.
Another strategy is using scented candles and incense. There are so many candles on the market geared toward stress relief. Candles can be purchased in many places from Yankee Candle to Walgreens. Candles come in many sizes and price points. They’re an affordable alternative to weed or alcohol and often last much longer.
Connect with animals. This doesn’t mean getting a pet. That’s not an option for many. However, you can volunteer at an animal shelter, go to the zoo, or visit a farm. Ride horses. Feed pigs. Snuggle with a cow. Animals provide comfort that instantly relaxes us.
Take up a hobby or sport. Hobbies can provide focus and a healthy distraction from anxiety and depression, Those two mental health demons are a constant bother, and being immersed in activity can keep them mute. Take up crocheting. Become a painter. Draw. Play basketball or tennis. These activities can help the body and the mind.
If you are struggling with depression, please seek help. Reach out to friends and family members. Speak to someone at church. Go to your clinic or hospital to get info on counseling and therapy. You are not alone. You don’t have to suffer alone. There are many who have the same struggle. Join forces and defeat your demons! You got this!
