Puerto Rico, Ya’ll Got to Clap Back!
“Floating island of Garbage?!” Not likely!
At Sunday night’s rally at Madison Square Garden, comic Tony Hinchcliffe made an insulting comment about the island of Puerto Rico, calling it a “floating island of garbage.” The last time I checked, Puerto Rico which means “rich port” was still rebuilding after a hurricane struck the island in September of 2017.
Despite the widespread devastation caused by Hurricane Maria, Puerto Rico’s residents would not be bowed and worked together in the rebuilding of the island. The fact that Hinchcliffe would label the island “garbage” is unfair and untrue.
It took the Trump Administration two years to send aid to Puerto Rico after the hurricane. Two years! Why did it take so long to help Puerto Rico? The island is a commonwealth of the United States. The people on the island are U.S. citizens and do vote in the presidential elections. Why did Trump treat these people as if they were a foreign country?
The answer is easy — racism.
Trump didn’t consider the people of the government of Puerto Rico on equal footing with the other states. He viewed the island as a place full of Spanish-speaking people who were probably illegal (because Trump doesn’t know political history or government affairs).
