Another Black Woman Dies at the Hands of the Police

Sonya Massey should be alive today. But she’s another. Massey has become yet another victim in a long line of victims of police brutality. The irony of this situation is that Massey was the one who had called the police.

Sonya Massey was in her home when, for some reason, she felt an intruder was attempting to break in. Understandably alarmed, Massey called the police. The police arrived, checked outside her home, and found nothing. They then entered Massey’s home.

The police report there are no suspicious persons around Massey’s residence. That should have been the end of it. Good night, right?

Wrong.

One of the officers asks Massey for her ID. Sitting on the sofa, Massey stands and begins looking through some papers. After a few minutes, another officer notices a pot on the stove boiling. The officer asks Massey to stop the search for her identity and take care of the boiling pot.

In the video released by the police department, the officer is closer to the pot than Massey. Why didn’t he turn off the stove? The officer moves away as Massey walks to the stove to remove the pot of water. Massey uses some kitchen towels to lift the pot.
