  • Note — Spoilers ahead!

I just finished Season One of “Godzilla: Singular Point” and found it to be an intriguing story. There’s so much that I want to share about this show. First, I was surprised by how well the monsters were incorporated into the storyline. If you’re a monster fan, better known as “Kaiju” in Japan, you will enjoy this anime. The series does a modern take on all the monsters from the Toho Company.

The monsters first appear when red dust infests Tokyo Bay. The first was Rodan, a flying dinosaur with a large beak and even larger destructive tendencies. However, after scaring the locals, Rodan suddenly dies. More Rodan eventually appears and soon, they too, die. It would appear that too long away from the red dust causes the bird monsters to die.

Enter Otaku Factory, a small tech company, investigating a blinking alarm at an old home. They come across an old phonograph playing a children’s song. As the song plays, more monsters appear. There’s Manda in the sea taking out submarines and Anguirus on land, deflecting bullets. Eventually, the title character appears — Godzilla.

Each episode ends on a cliffhanger. If you’re into science and science fiction, you will enjoy all the talk of calculations, gadgetry, and time travel. The foremost technology is Jet Jaguar, created by Otaku Factory. Jet Jaguar only had one movie in the Toho movie franchise. It appeared in Godzilla vs. Megalon. I loved how so many monsters from the 60s and 70s appear in the episodes.

The human characters are an eclectic mix. Some are funny and good. While others have the typical ulterior motives. There’s Mei, a genius college student who is pulled into the mystery of the red dust and singular points. Along with the brainy Yun and his crazy boss, these characters work together to head off a catastrophe. Their enemy is the Shiva Corporation who has knowledge of the Singular Points.

At the end of season one, Jet Jaguar and Godzilla battle. This is the series only flaw. Once Jet Jaguar was introduced, it was pretty clear that it would fight Godzilla. In a devastated Tokyo, the two square off, and in the end, Jet Jaguar is victorious and the red dust disappears. All seems well, however, the Shiva Corporation is shown building a towering MechaGodzilla and a key character thought dead reveals himself to be very much alive.

I can’t wait for Season Two of “Godzilla: Singular Point.” Netflix needs to hurry up and approve the second season. I want to learn more about this MechaGodzilla, which monsters will be featured, and whether or not Godzilla will make a roaring return. I rate the first season of “Godzilla” Singular Point” a 4 out of 5. Check it out!
