Introducing Tim Walz: Vice Presidential Running Mate for Kamala Harris
Let’s learn about Mr. Walz
Presidential candidate Kamala Harris has chosen her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. The initial reaction to Walz’s selection has been positive. He is a well-known figure in Minnesota, a family man, and a former school teacher. Most recently, Walz called Trump and Vance “weird.” This went viral on social media and made Walz popular with younger voters.
Now, he’s going to be campaigning with Harris as the vice presidential nominee. I don’t know much about Walz beyond what I’ve learned in the past eight hours, but I am slightly disappointed with the choice. While Walz has the credentials on paper and probably would put Vance in a verbal headlock, I had hoped that Harris would pick a running mate of color and someone slightly younger.
Walz is older than Harris. Yes, he’s more experienced than Vance. Yes, he’ll pull in older voters, but he’s fallen into the “older white man” trap. If something (God forbid) happened to Harris during her presidency, America would be back to square one with an old white man at the helm.
I would have loved for Harris to have picked a VP younger than her but slightly older than Vance, someone in their 40s who brings a different generational viewpoint, is social media savvy and understands the cultural and social issues in this country. In addition, a candidate of color would have been the icing on the cake.
