I Wouldn’t Survive the Squid Game

But it’s so addictive to watch!

I’m not into a lot of gore and an abundance of violence. I like action movies but I don’t need to see someone’s brain splattered on a wall or their guts being devoured by feral dogs. Give me the quick kill. I want to see as little blood as possible. That all changed when I began watching Squid Game.

Squid Game, an international import from South Korea, arrived on Netflix on September 17th. It’s been burning up the internet ever since. I usually don’t jump on the bandwagon when it comes to popular shows. For example, I have yet to watch an episode of Game of Thrones. But I was curious after seeing scenes on Tik Tok and Instagram. I decided to see what all the fuss was about.

I’m so glad I did!

I’ve been binging Squid Game all weekend. It’s left me wide-eyed and shaken with every episode. Without giving too much away, Squid Game really takes the meaning of what people will do for money to the next level. The violence is both in your face and not. I mean people are killed but there’s not much emphasis on close-ups of their guts. The gore is not the focal point. Even some of the minions in the show are seen washing away the blood.

What really draws me in is the human story. Hundreds of down on their luck people are drawn into a game run by an unknown man. The people agree to play in the games for the chance of winning a large sum of money. The players are then whisked away to a secret island. There, dressed in athletic clothing, they must compete and win six games. What the players don’t realize is that if they lose a game, they’re eliminated (i.e. killed).

After watching the first game, I knew I wouldn’t be one of the survivors. It’s not that I couldn’t compete, I’d just be too scared once the bullets start flying. My nerves would betray me. The fight or flight response would kick in. If I see people getting mowed down like animals, I would get the heck out of there as fast as I could. But running away means instant death.

It amazes me how someone can come up with such an interesting storyline. It’s also great to see how deeply developed the characters are. You want them to win. You want them to lose. You want them to fight back. I cried. I yelled at the screen and I cheered when a favorite made it through a game. Squid Game is definitely must-see viewing!

I’m almost done with Season One. I hear there’ll definitely be a Season Two. I wonder how they will top the first season or will it be a continuation of the final episode? In any event, I will definitely watch. Netflix is streaming some cool shows and Squid Game is right in the thick of them. Check it out and let me know what you think.
