Let’s celebrate ancient stones.

January 7th is Old Rock Day. And this country and the world have plenty of old rocks to celebrate.

From Mount Rushmore to Stonehenge, old rocks have been an instrumental part of human development and history.

For example, look at the pyramids of Egypt. These marvels of construction are thousands of years old. They were designed and built by human hands. They used simple tools and manpower to build the pyramids, statues, and temples that still exist today.

Another example is Mount Rushmore. This is where you’ll find the larger-than-life carvings of the presidents. Each face took years to sculpt and has been a tourist attraction since the early 20th century.

Another amazing relic is the Aztec pyramids. Similar in design to the Egyptian pyramids, the Aztecs also created wonders with stone, leaving behind structures that are studied by scientists from around the world. This is also true for the structures built by the Incans and the Mayans. These three ancient cultures created stone architecture with just their hands and primitive tools. These structures have survived for thousands of years.

When you visit a city, state, or country, seek out the ancient rocks. These rocks tell a story. They’re a history of the people that lived hundreds or thousands of years ago. The rocks tell us how the people lived, survived, and died. They provide pictures and symbols that inform us of the people’s culture and traditions. Old rocks need to be treated with care as they teach us about the past and help to influence our present.
