Facebook Groups Contain a Treasure Trove of Information and Resources
Get in on some good stuff!
I joined Facebook back in 2008. At the time, it was another “platform of the moment” that everyone wanted to be a part of. I joined because many of my friends and acquaintances were on the platform. I saw it as another way to stay connected and up to date on what was going on in our busy lives. Little did I know that Facebook would become an integral part of my writing career.
A few months after joining, I received requests to join various Facebook groups. The requests were based on the posts I had liked and/or commented on. Since I’m a mom, the initial requests came from mom groups — new moms, parenting groups, and magazines that catered to moms. I joined groups that were relevant to me and then the process would start again with writing groups.
Now, this is where it gets good! The writing groups on Facebook cover every genre. If you’re a poet (like me) there were poetry groups. If you’re a fiction writer, there were fiction groups. If you’re a playwright….well. you get the idea. Soon, I was connecting with writers across the country and around the world.
But this is where it gets even better. Not only was I meeting other writers, but I was also getting writing tips and submissions information. I was informed of upcoming contests, their deadlines, and their guidelines. I was introduced to magazines and journals that I didn’t know existed and got an insider’s view of the ones I did know about. The writing groups were exactly what I needed to boost my writing career.
Fast forward to 2021, the knowledge I’ve gained from my writing groups has helped me to connect with editors, publish several poems, and last year, win my first poetry contest. I’ve assisted other writers with their work, edited manuscripts, and made some money in the process. Facebook Groups can be a big help with anything that you’re trying to do. So log on and jon a group today!
