Deep Freeze

Winter is here!

It is colder than a snowman’s chest outside! In my city, the morning temp has been 4 degrees for the past two days. When it “warmed” up, it was a high of 20 degrees. I wore two pairs of socks, two pairs of pants, a long-sleeved shirt, a short-sleeved shirt over it, and a hoodie over them both. I do not play when it comes to cold weather. But this is beyond cold — it’s freezing.

I don’t mind winter. A little cold, a little snow, frosty breath, and all that. But when the icicles have icicles, it becomes too much. I mean, I’d rather deal with the snow. At least when it snows, it’s warmer outside.

In my part of the country, the weather is on some crazy stuff. The forecast for Monday is 40 degrees! How do we go from 4 degrees to 40 degrees?! That’s how people get sick! Bad enough our immune systems are getting a beatdown from COVID. The weather wants to tag team in.

This is the time of year when I long for summer. I love the heat. I love sunshine on my face. A love to feel a warm breeze on my skin. Even in the Spring when it rains a lot, at least the weather is warmer. You know what you’re getting during the Spring and Summer months. In winter, you get everything and then some.

I’ll be running errands once again and so I need to make sure my outfit is ready for the day. It can’t always be warm outside, but I can make myself warm. I hate being cold. It brings back too many memories of when I was a little girl and my family and I were huddled around the kitchen stove for warmth. The oil had run out and mom didn’t have money to get the tank refilled. When it was cold outside, the house would become a refrigerator and we’d walk around in layers with the stove turned up high. We were damn lucky we didn’t burn the house down.

We have gas heat in my house, but our house is drafty too, I need to find ways to reduce the cold air flowing into the house. I have some tarps up on some doors and some plastic on some windows. I need to do more to keep the warmth in. How many more days until Spring?
