My first encounter with YouTube was when I was searching for free Godzilla movies. As a Kaiju fan, I preferred not paying Amazon for my favorite monster. A found a couple, Godzilla vs King Ghidorah and Destroy All Monsters, that I’d watch whenever I needed a monster fix. Nothing like mindless destruction to ease the stress after a hard day of work. It was fun and it was free which was perfect for me.
Eventually, I moved on to music videos. My favorite artists are Beyonce, Drake, and Taylor Swift. Any time those artists released a new song, I immediately went to YouTube for the video. Sometimes it was posted immediately, sometimes I had to wait a month after the song’s release. But again, YouTube provided access for free.
My next move was to Anime. I’m a huge fan of anime. During the early days of Naruto, I would check YouTube for free episodes and sneak peaks of upcoming episodes. So many people were posting anime on YouTube. After posting, there was a growing number of anime fans creating channels to talk about their favorite episodes.
Life distracted me from continuing my anime pursuits on YouTube. But a couple of years ago, I returned to YouTube on the advice of a friend. She introduced me to a ton of creators who had hundreds if not thousands of subscribers (i.e. followers). I started following people who were makeup artists, crafters, and foodies. They would provide tutorials, resources, and new ideas.
YouTube has become one of the platforms where people are making thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of dollars every year. Their videos get hundreds of thousands of views and that’s how they make their money. The creators love what they do and it shows. The quality of their videos shows a passion for their work.
I have yet to start my own YouTube channel. But you may be in a position to start your own. All you need is an idea, video equipment, and post content at least once a week. Many of the creators that I follow post at least once, some twice, a week.
If you like to be on camera, have an on-air personality, you can become a YouTube star. It won’t happen overnight, but if you stick with it, have a consistent message, and provide a service for your viewers, your channel will grow. It’s free to start a channel and once the YouTube powers that be see that your channel is growing, you could start getting paid for your videos. For many creators, their channels have become their sole means of income. Some creators have made deals with brands based on the success of their channels.
So, why not? Create your YouTube channel. Push your idea and grow your subscriber base. The money will come and other opportunities will follow. As for me, I’m almost ready to take the leap. Have to get my ideas organized. See you on the small screen!
