Brighten the Winter Blahs

I’ve noticed that every winter, people wear dark colors during the season. I never understood why black, forest green, gray, dark blue, and brown were so popular during winter. When I saw someone wearing something colorful, it felt out of place, an aberration.

But the person wearing a colorful sweater, pants, or skirt seemed so happy. Their outfit brightened the room. It was like some sunshine had been added to our lives. I wanted to dress like the women I saw in the office, classroom, and street. I wanted to wear bright, bold colors that marked I was here to be seen.

It was a gradual process. I was skittish at first. I love color but only felt comfortable wearing bright patterns and bold designs during the Spring, Summer, and early Autumn. Once the days became shorter and the nights longer, I regressed into the “standard” uniform of dark clothing.

I started with accessories—a bold orange, red, or bright blue cuff. I’d add patterned scarves to my hair or around my neck. Next, I moved on to necklaces, long and short chunky pieces, popping with color. As a lover of rings, I would adorn my fingers with gold, silver, and colorful rings. Eventually, my outfits became more colorful during winter: a pink sweater, a bright purple skirt, and an orange pair of pants. I would wear a colorful outfit once a week…
