BPS enrollment has decreased over the past few years. What needs to happen is to increase enrollment by providing parents with more info about schools in their neighborhoods. I would suggest tv commercials, ads on the buses and trains, and social media posts that showcase different schools in different parts of the city. In addition, the Mayor needs to do something about the cost of living in the city. Housing is too high. gas is too high. food prices are too high. Financially strapped families can't afford to live in Boston - so they leave for cheaper cities and towns. How does Boston win those families back? Then there are the charter schools. They've acquired a large portion of Boston students. We need to get those students back into the district. If I were Mayor I would create affordability zones. Take some of the school buildings already closed and turned them into residential and retail communities. Provide tax breaks and incentives for businesses to operate within the zones. Have everything in one place - education, child care, medical/dental clinic, groceries, etc. People could rent or own in the zones. Mixed-income housing or housing based on specific incomes (for examples, less than $50,000 for a family of four and no more than $125,000 max).
