Blue Eye Samurai — Season One Review
A Look at the Fashion and the Action in the Series

Blue Eye Saurai takes us to the world of feudal Japan in the 1600s. We meet the main character, Mizu, a ronin samurai warrior on a revenge quest. Mizu is biracial, half-human and half-Japanese, disguising herself as a man. Mizu has piercing blue eyes. They’re beautiful but in Japanese society, mixed-breed children are considered monsters. The Shogunate has declared any Western influence is illegal and children born from such a union are considered monsters.
Mizu’s childhood begins with a mystery. Men were sent to murder her when she was an infant. Fortunately, the men assigned couldn’t carry out the deed. Mizu and her mother escape and hide in the woods. Through flashbacks, we see glimpses of Mizu’s life — her mother and her in happier days, Mizu watching children from a village playing, Mizu’s mother cutting her hair and disguising her as a boy, and the fire that killed Mizu’s mother and made her an orphan.
Mizu is taken in by a blind swordmaker. She becomes his apprentice and learns the art of sword making. In addition, Mizu learns how to wield a sword by watching other swordsmen practice in their front yard. Over the years, Mizu learns how to shape metal into beautiful swords. She also gains strength from the sword-making process and other duties she fulfills over the years.
As a young woman, Mizu decides it’s time to find the men who destroyed her family. Her “swordfather”…
