Autumn Weather

It’s so hard to know what to wear

Blues skies and autumn leaves

Today it will reach the low 70s by the early afternoon. It was in the mid-50s when I left for work earlier this morning. I wasn’t sure what to wear. Do I dress for the morning temp or the afternoon one? Do I wear a light jacket or a heavier coat? Do I wear ankle socks, knee highs, or stockings? Getting read in the morning is an ordeal in itself.

I watched the morning newscast, focusing on the weather report. The meteorologist stated that we were going to have a couple of days of warm weather. In fact, today, Thursday, was her pick of the week. Sunshine, blue skies, and warm air will arrive in the late morning/early afternoon. I was happy to hear that we wouldn’t be dealing with more rain like earlier in the week. But I was still unsure of what to wear.

When it rains in the fall, it’s easy to pick an outfit. A nice pair of pants, a heavy sweater or suit jacket and I’m good to go. I can wear sneakers or boots. Rain gives you more flexibility when it comes to footwear. But when it’s sunny and warm, you feel like wearing a summer outfit. That’s how autumn is in New England. The 50s can quickly go into the 80s in a heartbeat.

I just want to be warm enough in the early morning air and cool enough in the afternoon heat. Today, it felt like it was well into the 70s. The sun shone bright and hot as the students were dismissed from class. Outside, the school buses gleamed under the mid-day sun. Everything was bright and shiny as the students rushed to the main gate to walk to the train station. Their jackets were tied around their waists or stuffed in their backpacks. Short sleeves fluttered in the afternoon breeze.

It’s a three-day weekend! The weather will once again be all over the place. But that’s ok. Autumn in New England is always full of surprises. Next week, the weather will skew warm with temps reaching the high 70s. That means I’ll need to pair my fall clothes with my summer ones. It’ll be a mix and mash of styles. That’s what makes autumn one of my favorite seasons.
