As an educator, I've witnessed first hand the academic injustice done to Black and Brown children. I've taught for over 20 years and it seems racism has grown stronger since I was a new teacher. When Obama was elected president, I believed that America had finally gone over the mountain of racism and was on the other side towards toerlance and understanding. I was wrong. Racism fed into people's fears that educated Black and Brown people would supplant them in their jobs and suck awak their wealth. Racism was reenergeizxed. And when Trump was elected, racism was given a hall pass to roam across the country infecting every facet of American life. Boooks are banned. gender studies scrubbed. Poliotical leaders being open;ly racist towards African American curriculums. Students being suspnded over hair styles or even defending themselves against white attackers. What's next? A return to the fields? Colored Only signs at public fountains and restrooms? The only way to combat racism is to have more students of color educated on all aspects of American history - the good, the bad, & the ugly (mostly ugly). Knowledge is power.
